I have never before had the honor of a hummingbird guest. I don't even have feeders for them. This one seemed to enjoy my impatiens just fine. What is it about hummingbirds that is so magical? Monarch butterflies have been hanging around, as well. Somehow, it is peaceful to see these fragile seeming creatures.
My favorite moment was seeing the chickadees at the bird bath outside the dining room window. They are so full of energy, so quick in their movements. I wouldn't say they are graceful, as grace implies a certain smoothness of movement, but they have a certainty about them. They are precise. I like that. I imagine that, could they speak, they would do so in clipped tones. Not unfriendly, but direct and cheerful. I don't imagine that chickadees are the type of birds who would indulge in idle gossip.

I am taking Big Sprout shoe shopping tomorrow. School starts soon, and she has destroyed all her footwear. I am hoping to find her some nice clothes for school, as well.
Little Sprout will be unbearably jealous.
Little Sprout cut her hair. Again. This time she cut a much larger section, and she cut it even shorter than last time. When I asked her why she would do such a thing, she told me she wants to look like the "boy at grandma's house". Ugh. So my girly-girl Little Sprout wants to look like her nephew? Hunh.
I am tempted to shave her head. At least then the lack of hair would look intentional.
Welcome to my garden. Come in, take off your shoes, and let me offer you a seat in the shade, a cool drink, and friendly conversation while we enjoy the beauty of the day...
And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. ~ Kahlil Gibran

A Bright Spot
I saw a woodpecker in the yard today. I couldn't see it well enough to really identify it any further than to say it was definitely a woodpecker, since I was trying to peer through about 4 trees worth of branches to catch a glimpse of it.
It made me feel a little better.

Birds at Barefoot Manor
So far, I have spotted
Black~Capped Chickadees (a pair)
Cardinals (a pair)
Blue Jay
Not an impressive list, I know. Still, considering the absolute lack of bird life when we first moved in this is a VAST improvement. I will just continue to plant things that attract birds, put out my feeders, and work on my plans for a bird bath.
Eventually, this will be a birdie haven.
