I have to go back to school.
Yes, I am one of the uneducated masses in this country, and I have known for a long time that I need a degree of some sort if I am going to be able to retire at any age before 90.
So I am looking at schools, and trying to figure out how I can fit classes into my schedule.
Worse, I am trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
It's harder than it sounds. Really.
Do I stay in Health care, or get out? I am kinda burned out, but I like it. Tough call.
Do I choose something for the $$ and figure that I can retire earlier, or do I try to find something that makes me happy, knowing that it will pay less?
How many years of schooling am I willing to endure? Well, I like school, so it's more like "how many years am I willing to play at school before I get a real job and start taking care of business"
So many questions, and so few answers. Add in the fact that I am terrified over the bare idea of going out into public and dealing with all the people that are involved in the schooling process, and the fact that I have to consider my fears in my career choice, and the fact that my depression keeps rearing it's ugly head and telling me that I can't do this.... *sigh*
I dunno. I think it would be a lot easier if I could just win the lottery....

Nursing? Decent money, a program near you (though don't know how long the waiting list is), and still health care field. I should have other ideas, but must be tired . . .
I wish I knew all the careers in the world. There have got to be some fascinating jobs out there that none of us even know about.

Any of the health care fields should be good. Nursing, radiography, medical billing, etc. Many programs take only 5 semesters and many have online courses that fit into working people's schedules. I have taken at least 5 online courses including chemistry and part 2 of anatomy and physiology! Depending on the class, so can sometimes work through them quickly and take the final early. I finished one math class in 5 weeks!
Start be taking a look around at the schools and what they offer. See if a program really grabs your attention, then march forward!!
You can do whatever you set your mind too!! I started back to school just before I turned 50 years old!!
I am still trying to figure out what I want to do next. Ha.
I would like to return to school. I lack 30 hours in a 5 year program in design and architure. I think it helps to do something that you LOVE because then it is fun and not hard work.
I think that you should look at something that will always be needed like nurses & teachers.
What did you like to do as a child? That is a good indicator of what you love the most.

Getting additional education probably can't hurt, but the world we knew has changed a lot with the @$#@% recession. Latest information shows that a college degree per se won't do a thing for your long term income - unless you go to engineering, data or some other specialized niche.
Health care happens to be one of the few "growth" professions now, so perhaps a honing in that area? In my backyard there are apparently jobs for RN's and NP's and other specialties like respiratory techs, and other medical techs - apparently at jobs above entry level. Perhaps you can take your current training and experience and build on them?
Pam's right about looking at what you like or enjoy and about taking it one step at a time. It would be a shame to commit a lot of time, energy and money to a completely different career only to find a)there are no jobs, b) you don't like doing it, or c) it doesn't provide any better financial future than the career you are giving up.
