Raised Bed Progress Report

Oh, I am gonna hurt tomorrow.

This morning I got up bright and early to go over to my folks' place and work on my raised beds. They looked pretty silly sitting there with no dirt in them. So I moved enough dirt today to fill 5.5 of the 10 beds we built. The beds are 4'x8' and 10" deep.

I have no idea how many feet of dirt that is that I just hauled, but tomorrow I will be able to tell you how many Tylenol it takes to get me out of bed! LOL

I would have kept on going, but when it started to SNOW on me, I decided I had had enough.

While shovelling, I kept thinking about how I needed to be conscious of what I was doing and be totally present in the moment. You know what? I didn't want to be conscious of every muscle as it protested the demands I was putting on it. I didn't want to be aware of the wind freezing the sweat on my back. I didn't want to be aware of the blisters quickly rising on my hands. So I resolutely turned my mind to fantasizing about how wonderful things will be in the spring when I am planting my fabulous veggies started from seed all by my self. Later, I will try to be aware of myself when I am doing something a little more pleasant. *smile*

Now see..... I don't see a problem with focussing on something else once you've become aware of being in pain. *grin* You've acknowledged the pain & discomfort, now focus on something else so you can move on to other things. LOL

Hope you're not feeling too bad this morning, though it sounds like you really worked hard yesterday.

I just keep telling myself it is a good workout.

That is a lot of shoveling! We made six 4'x4' beds using wood this past spring and another that's probably 5'x5' or 6'x6' out of field stones.

But I typically do a little at a time - you know, pace myself ;). You're quite the little dynamo! I'm impressed.

You'll be very happy with your raised beds in the spring and summer.

Hi BG,
I hope you're not too stiff today. When I made my 12 X 12 bed, I bought bunches of those bags of dirt from Menards when they were on sale in the spring. I had NO IDEA how much dirt it took to fill a raised bed and ended up getting a dumptruck load and hauling that in a wheelbarrow and shoveling it in and the bed could still use a few more inches.

It will be so cool though in the spring when you're out there planting all those little seeds!

I am actually pleasantly surprised. I am stiff, but not so much that I can't function.

I am so excited for spring when I can plant in my pretty beds!
