And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. ~ Kahlil Gibran

I Remembered!

I remembered to set back the clocks all on my own! I am so proud. I am usually that goofball who shows up at everything an hour early in the fall and an hour late in the spring. But today I managed to get it just right.

I just have to be careful not to sprain anything patting myself of the back.

Yesterday, "The Self-Sufficient Suburban Garden" by Jeff Ball arrived in the mail. I read through it last night while at work, and found it highly enjoyable. It is basically a five year plan on how to become mostly self sufficient for food on the average suburban plot. He talks about the standard intensive gardening practices with an emphasis on staying organic and tailoring your garden to the individual needs of your family. The entire tone of the book is very much like neighbors visiting over the fence, with Jeff freely admitting and laughing over the mistakes he has made in his journey to learn how to garden better.

"The Self-Sufficient Suburban Garden" is not a "nuts and bolts" kind of book. Quite often the author sends you out to look up information on your own. Rather, it is more of an IDEA he is selling. That even those of us who do not or cannot live out in the country can manage a surprisingly high level of self-sufficiency. Some of the information is a bit dated (the book is copyrighted 1983), but otherwise I think it would be a fun read for most of the gardeners I know.

That sounds like a great book. I'm still making my way through "A Handmade Life" and will post a review when I'm done.

Are you going to be gardening in the yard there at your apartment, or will you be waiting till you have your own house???? Best of luck with your goals whenever & wherever you decided to execute them. (Execute comes across as such a negative word in my experience, but it really seemed to be the only one that fit here. Embark just didn't quite work.)

I am doing most of my gardening over at my folks' place, and Dad will probably let me do some of the stuff in the book.

I will probably have to wait for the rest of it 'till we own, though. He did have some good ideas for indoor gardening or patio gardening, but we don't get enough light on the patio and I don't know where I could squeeze a little space out for an indoor garden.

I am hopeful, after reading this, that I will be able to attain most of my goals while staying in the 'burbs, though. I would LOVE to live out in the middle of nowhere, but I don't know that DH would ever comply. So at least now I have some hope that I could manage okay in town. I will just hold out for a big yard! LOL
