And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. ~ Kahlil Gibran

Rain, Rain, and More Rain

Before I get going, I would like to thank everyone for the Birthday Wishes for Little Sprout. She had a great party, ate cake and ice cream, and received noisy presents that I am already tired of. It was a wonderful day!

We are having 40 days and 40 nights of rain here in my little corner of MN. If my childhood pastor hadn't been so adamant about God's promise not to flood the earth again, I would be out back building an ark as we speak.

Well, really it isn't quite that bad. The rain never seems to come down hard. It just drizzles constantly.

I had to laugh the other day as I was going through the local drive through. The gal working the window was all excited to see the rain. It was just barely dripping, so I thought she was a little nuts. It must have shown on my face, because she explained that she was from southern CA, and they get excited over every little drop of rain there.

Silly folks, they should live somewhere with proper seasons.

Speaking of proper seasons, I have been a little disappointed in the fall color this year. The weather lady says it is because of the drought over the summer and the rain now. I think the Powers That Be are just trying to make me unhappy. Cuz, ya know, it's all about me. Hehe.

Winter coats are coming out, and I bought Little Sprout boots two weeks ago to deal with the snow.

I have to say that I am really, REALLY disappointed in the makers of boots for small children. I had to go to three separate stores before I found boots under $40/pr that had any kind of insulation or waterproofing on them. Come on, folks! This is MN! The land of 6 months of winter and 4 months of mud. What kind of fool stocks nothing but tall canvas shoes for children's winter footwear?

I don't know about the rest of the world, but I make my kids play outside in the snow. Some of the most fun games in the world can only be played in a foot or more of snow. But in order to let my kids go out there and run off their cabin fever, they have to have warm foot gear. I can layer their clothes and socks, but that will do little good if their coats and boots are miserable cheap pieces of garbage.

Grrrr...

Anyway. I am looking forward to the snowfall, strangely enough. Though I still have things that should be done before the ground freezes hard, I can't help but long for the days of hibernation in a warm house with snow blowing outside the windows. Winter is the ideal time for reading, crocheting, and needlepoint. You just snuggle up with blankets, pets, and kids to stay warm and keep your hands and mind busy with whatever item you have closest to hand.

*sigh* Maybe I will have to take a winter vacation to enjoy it....

I had to laugh when you said, "Land of six months of winter and four months of mud." Sounds a lot like where I live in Maine ;).

I hate it when I'm looking for a decent coat or boots or gloves for my kiddles and I can only find crap that will fall apart before the season commences. It's so aggravating! I shop at Army surplus stores for hubby and me, because I know the stuff is usually built to last, but I can't see my kids in camouflage ... although I do recall that movie with Patrick Swayze - Red Dawn .... For some reason, I always thought it was set in Minnesota.

I'm rambling, aren't I?

Don't forget to get your SAD light box so when the winter really sets in, you can bask in the light and avoid depression!!

Wendy... I thought Maine was 9 months of snow and 3 months of really bad sledding!

Do you have a Mills Fleet Farm nearby? They have a great selection of nice boots for little kids (at least the store here in Rochester does).
I'm looking forward to a winter of knitting and crocheting too!
