And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. ~ Kahlil Gibran

Springtime Paralysis

I don't know what's wrong with me. Spring is here, there is so much to do and so many things to enjoy....why is it that I just don't really want to do ANYTHING?!

It isn't just a feeling of laziness, either. I am defiantly lazy. I get angry just thinking about all the things I have to think about and ultimately do.

What the heck?

It is like some giant demonic vacuum came along and sucked all the joy and energy right out of my life.

I don't get it

Quit thinking and start doing.

Sometimes, when there are so many things to do or we want to do, it overloads our brains and this overload causes a sense of paralysis. Each of us encounters this from time to time.

Years ago I was a child abuse investigator for the state. At times, I would have so many ongoing cases that there were days I just couldn't seem to get going. I couldn't decide which cases were more important and which I could set aside for awhile.

Eventually, I realized the answer was in learning to a) prioritize and b) to breakdown these big tasks into small components. That did the trick then and still helps me now when, like you, I begin to feel overwhelmed.

Haha! I hope you get out of the "laziness mode" soon because spring is upon us gardeners! I know the feeling...sometimes all the work just seems overwhelming :)

I do know what you are talking about! I just spent a week sitting on my ever-widening caboose veggie out instead of doing anything constructive!! Yes, it has rained (hard) for over a week solid, but there are other things I COULD be doing!

So, I stole another bloggers design for a To-Do list. Can't remember whose! Anyway, instead of having one really long list of everything that needs attention, it s broken down by category: Garden, housework, crafts, school/work, cooking, misc. If it is raining, I don;t even look at the gardening category. No point.

And I break down big jobs into smaller line items. I need to clean and organize my closet. Way too big job to contemplate in my current mood. So I listed: hanging items, drawers, shelves, and shoes separately. Ten minutes and the shoes were done! Go sit down or do something else. Yes, it will take me longer than if i didn't stop until it was finished, but I won't even start if that is the rule!

And if that doesn't work, let's meet up for lunch! Somewhere between MN and TN!

Or, you could try a glass of chilled white wine while sitting in the YOUR garden in the spring sunshine and think of all you have achieved over the last year.

Worth a try?

Just one thing. When I get that way, and I do ... too often ... I do just one thing, and while it doesn't break the spell, at least I get to say that I accomplished something :).

Send up a flare, please, so I won't worry that you have buried yourself in the garden!!
