Frugal Food: Week 2

Total Spent: $45.98

Total Saved: $39.03

Not too bad, huh? I shorted myself out of $3 savings by forgetting to use 2 BOGO coupons that I had (don't know what I was thinking), but still, $39 worth of savings on foods we will eat is pretty durn good.

I think the best part was the turkey breast for $.68/lb. I do love me some turkey. Oh, and that milk? FREE!

My plan is to allow $50/wk for food, paper products, personal care items, and baby stuff (diapers and wipes). I am pretty sure that is a good number. Some folks say it is way too low, and others don't spend that much for a family of 4, so as long as I am in the middle I will call it good. Any $$ I don't use will be put into an envelope to use when there are exceptionally good sales that I wanna stock up on or weeks when I am short on cash.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

$50 a week for food? That's amazing Barefoot and for 4 people! My weekly grocery budget is $90 and I'm not even buying meat. (I think I have a problem!)

I will be interested to see how this pans out! Doesn't seem enough money per week, but if you have a good pantry already full, it could work!

I have gone back to the envelope method of my early-married days. I am trying to keep better track of the grocery money, so when Studly asks me how much we spend on groceries, I might actually have a clue!!

Well now you two have me doubting myself....

No, I can make this work. I do have a pretty well stocked pantry already. I have a pretty good stockpile of beef, venison, pork and chicken to draw from as well as quite a lot of frozen and canned veggies. Plus I save almost all our leftovers to make "stone soup" with on a regular basis (it is really tasty!)

I am worried that milk and diapers are going to mess with my budget, but I am going to do my best to stick with this....it will be fun to see how well I do!

Dang!! That is incredible! I hope you're able to continue in the same manner as you progress. Sounds like you've had great savings so far! (I could easily spend $200 a week on the 3 of us and the dogs. In fact, I HAVE DONE for quite a while, though we've all got our "specials" and then there are the "occasionals" that have to be bought periodically that don't really get budgeted for because they're unusual. Cut out both "specials" and "occasionals" and we really can do on a budget of just about $100 per week for the 3 of us, and the dogs $20 ever 2 or 3 weeks.)

Have a good week, BG!

how does your goal "I want to feed my family home cooked food that is chemical and hormone free." fit with all the processed, packaged food your posted?

Long and short....it doesn't.

Like I posted on my "finding balance" post, I have had to set aside the goals not pertaining to getting debt free for now. I am tired of struggling to meet too many goals and not making headway on any of them.

Answer your question?

Barefoot, I think you are doing a great job at saving money with your groceries and budget.

One step at a time, persevere, and it will pay off. Just sorry that the sprouts are sick. That use to blow my budget when I had sick kids. The doctor's bill, the prescriptions cost so much.

My pay off was to keep the kids as well as I could by prevention. Simple things like washing your hands a lot, don't drink after anyone, cover your mouth when you sneeze, lots of vitamins, eat healthy, excersise and plenty of sleep and keeping the bathroom especially clean when one was sick.

Don't let anyone tell you different. Only you know what is best for your family.

I forgot how pretty your new blog looks. very cool.
