Cabin Fever Isn't Just For Grown-Ups

Believe it or not, Little Sprout has a terrible case of Cabin Fever. She is even willing to accept running up and down the halls of our building as an alternative to being in the apt.

I can't say that I blame her. When I think about how much she loved sitting out in the yard and watching me garden last summer, it seems a crime that she hasn't been outside to PLAY in so terribly long. She just doesn't walk well enough to be playing in the snow, and MN doesn't have much else right now.

Maybe I will have to fork out the gas money to take her to the Conservatory down at Como again. That, at least, is practically free and warm.

I have thought about taking her to an indoor play-place like Chuck E Cheese or McD's, but I don't really think I could survive that.

The sun is promising, though the temps are still too low to give much hope that spring is coming. Dad was telling me that next week it is supposed to get up above freezing, and that sounds like heaven to me. I hope to get plastic up over some of my raised beds (if I can find them under the snow) sometime over the next few days. I am hoping to melt the snow and warm the soil enough to get some cooler weather plants started really early this year. It might work and it might not, but it will get me outside doing SOMETHING productive.

Doesn't it just suck?

You've given me an idea on how to speed up the garden thawing process! I know we have some greenhouse plastic somewhere. I was just looking on my blog for this time last year, and I had left one bed covered all winter so at this time I was PLANTING lettuce, kale, spinach, and cilantro. I can't remember how it worked, though.

Hi sweetie-- I know all about that cabin fever!! Multiply it by 3 and that's what we have here!!

We used to love going to Chuckies during the week. They are hardly busy on weekdays with all the kids in schools and we actually had the place to ourselves a little bit. We definetely don't go on weekends!! Been a while since we've been there and the closest one is an hour and a half away.

Deb-
I remember that, and how jealous I was of you and your early planting. I should have done the same when I set up my beds last fall, so that I wouldn't have to go searching through the snowbanks to find them.

Jenny-
Oh, I can't imagine having to deal with more than one.

I guess I am lucky in that I only have to go 45 min to the nearest CEC, but I still think that is too far.

Sorry to hear that Little Sprout is having such a tough time. Is she too small even for 10 or 15 minutes of being pulled around on a sled by Big Sprout or yourself??? Or a bit of snow-ball toss??? I seem to recall my sisters taking DD out at approx. the same age for a little of light snow play on a couple of warm days way back when. It certainly doesn't mean sending Little Sprout out for a couple of hours, as we can the older kids, but even just a few minutes on a slushy sidewalk or teaching her to make snowballs or getting pulled on a sled may help.

A good part of me thinks that at this point in the year the cabin-feverish-ness comes more from not getting enough sunlight, than not getting enough exercise. And 10 to 15 minutes a day is really all that's recommended for any of us.

Best of luck in keeping Little Sprout from going stir-crazy from being stuck inside so much!!!

Poor kid!

I think just about everyone is feverish at this point and anxious for spring. It feels like it has been a long winter.
