The Stuff of Myth and Legend

A White Stag has been sighted in the Scottish Highlands.

I am struck by how people, even those usually pragmatic to a fault, are having a visceral response to this sighting. The fact that the location of the deer has to be kept secret breaks my heart. Why would someone want to destroy something so beautiful, so special and rare?

I remember when the White Buffalo was born in Wisconsin. I very nearly took a pilgrimage to see her. Now I wish I would have.

Even if one doesn't believe in the myths and legends associated with such creatures, it is impossible to deny that they have a sense of "otherworld-ness" to them. Perhaps if I were to watch them behave just like every other (traditionally colored) animal of their species, I would lose that sense of awe.

I hope not.

Ooooh, that's fabulous. I always get a sense of a visit from the Gods, when I read about something like this. Like they're saying "We're still here, we stop by occasionally.... Do you recognize us?"

We recently (in the past couple of years) had sightings of an Albino moose in the interior, here. I think the person showing up with that moose on their wall (or in their freezer) would probably wind up lynched.

Just beautiful..

There is a white buffalo that was born here in Colorado, and if I remember the story right, she lived to be pretty old but was sadly struck by lightning during a freak storm. Fast forward a few years, and low and behold ANOTHER white buffalo was born. They believe she is the reincarnation of the one that came before her. Very sweet and extremely special.

We believe highly in the possibilities of such magic on other planes. Teenager believes that we just can't see them because our society is no longer in touch with the magic that they once were. If you no longer believe, you can no longer see. There was a great line in a movie that completely escapes me, but the little girl says to the skeptical old man, "But, sometimes we have believe in order to see.. " and that rings true for me.

I think they are otherworldly too.
